  • Adjuster for the Insured (public adjuster) - An individual allowed by license to contract with and represent the insured who have suffered losses covered by insurance for fire and other hazards. Adjusters for the insured may not adjust worker’s compensation losses.

  • Insurance Adjuster (independent adjuster) - An individual allowed by license to contract with and represent insurance companies to adjust fire and other hazards, crop, and/or workers' compensation losses.

  • A company/staff adjuster (an adjuster who is a salaried employee of an insurance company) does not need to be licensed by the State of Michigan. This license exemption does not apply to affiliated insurers within a holding company system (group) or leased through a management company (by contract). It only applies to the insurer with whom the adjuster is employed (1099 employee).

Applicant Can

  • Submit applications for Adjuster Designated Home State (ADHS) electronically.
  • Can reinstate a license electronically.
  • Can add lines of authority to an existing active license electronically.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

  • Applicant is allowed to use post office boxes for mailing addresses. A physical address is required in the residence/home address only.

  • All non-resident adjusters must show a home state on the Producer Database (PDB).

  • Applicant for the crop line of authority for the adjuster license must provide an insurance company NAIC number for the authorized insurance provider.

  • An adjuster for the insured must provide a copy of the adjuster contract that will be used and sent directly to Michigan.

  • All adjusters must provide information if connected to a fire repair contractor.

  • Prior to filing an application, an applicant with a conviction history is strongly encouraged to review Chapter 12 of the Michigan Insurance Code and the Guiding Principles.   • If applicant answers "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents to the state. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.  If submitting to the state please send:
  • a written statement explaining the circumstances, and

  • a copy of the official document which demonstrates the resolution of the charges, or any final judgment

  • Please include on any and all correspondence:
    • Name
    • SSN / FEIN
    • NIPR transaction number
  • Adjuster Designated Home State (ADHS) Rules:
    • In order for an applicant to designate a home state during the application process, the applicant must have an active non-resident adjuster license on the Producer Database (PDB) and no active resident adjuster license.
    • If designated home state license is inactive at the time of renewal and no active resident adjuster license exists, applicant may select another state with an active adjuster license as the designated home state. Application will defer to state for review.
    • If applicant holds only a non-resident adjuster license in a state that licenses resident adjusters, applicant is permitted to designate an active non-resident adjuster license as their home state license. Application will defer to state for review.
    • If applicant holds only an active non-resident adjuster license in a state that offers adjuster licensing, applicant must use current resident license to renew non-resident adjuster license. Application will defer to state for review.
    • If applicant has an active non-resident adjuster license in a state that does not license adjusters, and no active non-resident adjuster license, applicant must use current active resident license to renew non-resident adjuster license. Application will defer to state for review
    • Applicant may select Michigan as Adjuster Designated Home State while applying for their non-resident Michigan license.
  • Michigan does not discuss pending applications with anyone except for the applicant. Applicants must call or submit an e-mail to the state directly to obtain the status of a pending application. Please allow 14-21 business days to review the transaction and provide a response or request for additional information. If you have not received an update within this time frame you may contact the state directly to request a status and determine if additional documentation is required. To document licensure, companies should make a screen print of the producer's license status from the DIFS Insurance License Locator or from NIPR'S Producer Database (PDB).
