South Dakota - Resident Licensing - Continuing Education Changes
The South Dakota Division of Insurance adjusted two rules affecting continuing education. Both rule changes become effective on January 1, 2025.
ARSD 20:06:21:74 - Currently, if a producer wants to sell long-term care insurance, they are required to be licensed to sell life or health insurance, complete an eight-hour training course prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating long-term care insurance and complete four hours of ongoing training. The current rule required the four-hour ongoing training to be completed every second year following 2008 on July 1, meaning the four-hour ongoing training had to be completed every even year. This caused confusion for all parties involved, especially for those producers whose renewal period fell on an odd year. Going forward, producers will be required to obtain their four hours of ongoing training within their normal two-year renewal period by the end of their birth month.
ARSD 20:06:18:05.01 – The current rule addresses the two-year retention of course rosters and how the rosters should be collected. The rule indicates that an ‘original signature’ should be collected. Recognizing that providers commonly collect and maintain rosters electronically, this provision was removed.
If you have any questions, please contact the Division’s Continuing Education Department by phone (605.773.3563) or email (sdinsurance@state.sd.us).
