- Adjuster for the Insured (public adjuster) - An individual allowed by license to contract with and represent the insured who have suffered losses covered by insurance for fire and other hazards. Adjusters for the insured may not adjust worker’s compensation losses.
- Insurance Adjuster (independent adjuster) - An individual allowed by license to contract with and represent insurance companies to adjust fire and other hazards, crop, and/or workers' compensation losses.
- A company/staff adjuster (an adjuster who is a salaried employee of an insurance company) does not need to be licensed by the State of Michigan. This license exemption does not apply to affiliated insurers within a holding company system (group) or leased through a management company (by contract). It only applies to the insurer with whom the adjuster is employed (1099 employee).

Applicant Can

Business Rules
Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.
Individual's license number is the National Producer Number (NPN).
Applicant moving from another state to Michigan may apply for a resident license if they surrender previous state license within 90 days.
Applicants who are currently employed by, own stock in, are an officer or director of, or are in any other manner connected with a funeral establishment, mortuary, or cemetery cannot hold an insurance license in Michigan except the limited life license.
Non-citizens of the U.S. must have a resident license for selling insurance in one of the fifty (50) U.S. states.
Applicants are allowed to use P.O. Boxes for mailing addresses. A physical address is required in the residence or home address only.
Applicants for the variable line of authority (LOA) must supply FINRA CRD number on application.
Applicants applying for variable Annuities must hold active resident life license on Producer Database (PDB) to be eligible for variable contracts (cannot apply for both at the same time).
Applicants for a surplus lines license must hold an active resident license for property & casualty prior to applying for surplus lines.
Resident Insurance Adjuster applicants applying for workers' compensation LOA must actively hold or apply for fire & other hazards simultaneously.
Resident Producer applicants that apply for or currently holds active Property and Casualty LOAs may not apply for Personal Lines license in Michigan.

A written statement explaining the circumstances.
A certified copy of the official document which demonstrates the resolution of the charges or any final judgment.
Michigan does not discuss pending applications with anyone except the applicant. Applicants must call or submit an e-mail to the state directly to obtain the status of a pending application. Please allow 14-21 business days to review the transaction and provide a response or request for additional information. If you have not received an update within this time frame you may contact the state directly to request a status and determine if additional documentation is required.
