Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license for individuals electronically.
  • Submit major lines of authority.
  • Submit limited lines of authority.
  • Submit surplus lines for individuals.
  • Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application.
  • Print license electronically.

Business Rules

  • Please note that Colorado does not license independent adjusters. If you, or the party you are applying on behalf of, are an independent adjuster who works on behalf of an insurer, please do not apply for a public adjuster license.

  • Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

  • Applicant's name, SSN/FEIN, license number, addresses, birth date, and state of residence must match current Producer Database (PDB) record for resident state.

  • Applicant must have a valid country code and business email.

  • Applicant mailing address must be either his or her residence address or a personal P.O. Box.

  • Applicant may not apply for a license in their own resident state.

  • Applicant may not use a P.O. Box in the business or residence addresses.

  • Variable Annuities applicants who have not provided their CRD# on the application must mail or fax proof of FINRA registration. For applicants who have provided their CRD#, Pearson VUE will verify current registration on the FINRA website. If Pearson VUE is unable to verify this information, the applicant will be notified by mail.

  • Title applicants, including Attorney Title and Title Agency, must complete the Affiliated Business Arrangement Disclosure Form immediately after initial licensure or renewal of a Title license. The form can be found on Colorado's state website. Failure to submit the form is cause for license suspension, revocation, and or a fine.

  • Attorney Title and Title cannot be applied for in the same transaction.

  • To qualify for an individual non-resident Title Insurance Producer license, the applicant must hold an equivalent valid individual Title license in his/her resident or home state. The applicant’s Title Insurance Producer license must reciprocate with Colorado Title license requirements.

    • Colorado Title Insurance Producer license requirements include, but are not limited to, examination of Title to determine insurability, underwriting the policy and countersigning the insurance binder.
    • Escrow Officer and Title Marketing Representatives licenses/certifications do not meet the Colorado Title Insurance Producer license requirement and are not reciprocal with the Colorado Title license.

  • Applicant must have an equivalent active resident license when applying for a non-resident license.

    • Exception: Attorney Title, Health Maintenance, Nonprofits, and Surplus Lines

  • Surplus lines applicants must hold an active Property and Casualty line of authority (LOA) or apply for property and casualty LOA simultaneously in order to be eligible for Surplus Lines.

    • If applying for Property and Casualty, it is not necessary to apply for Personal Lines LOA. Property and Casualty covers Personal Lines.
  • Insurance Producer for the Life LOA is required when Variable Life and Variable Annuity LOA is selected.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
