Business Rules
Proof of Maine Residency Documentation Requirement
In order to be issued a Maine Resident License, you must be an individual domiciled in Maine OR an individual whose principal place of business is located in Maine. To establish your qualifications to be licensed as a Maine Resident, please provide the additional documentation to NIPR's ALD Attachment Warehouse as described in either A or B:
A. If you are an individual domiciled in Maine:
- Please provide a copy of a government-issued photo I.D. showing your permanent Maine address . Acceptable forms of I.D. include a State of Maine-issued driver’s license or State of Maine-issued I.D. card, or a federal government-issued I.D. which includes your photo and address.
If you do not have a photo I.D showing your permanent Maine address as described above, provide a current government-issued photo I.D. AND submit two or more of the following documents to demonstrate your permanent Maine residency:
- A recent utility bill with your name, showing your Maine address.
- A copy of a lease or mortgage for your Maine address, or a copy of an invoice for payment of a lease or mortgage for this address, listing you as the owner or lessee of this residence.
- A Maine motor vehicle registration showing you as the registered owner of a motor vehicle.
- A school or college ID card with your picture.
- A recent pay stub showing your employment with a Maine employer.
- An official local, state or federal document showing your current Maine address.
B. If you are not a current Maine resident, but your principal place of business is located in Maine:
If you are not a permanent Maine resident, but are seeking a Maine resident license because your principal place of business in the insurance industry is located in Maine, please provide the following information:
- Name of insurance industry employer.
- Mailing address of employer.
- Your position with the employer.
- Length of time you have worked for this employer.
- Phone number of employer.
- Email address of employer.
- Contact person at the employer who can verify your employment.
- Proof of employment, such as a pay stub, W-2 form or other proof.
Producers can print licenses electronically 24-48 hours after approval via www.maine.gov/insurance.
Applicant can qualify for the Multi-Peril Crop line of authority (LOA) under the Adjuster license class by either taking the Multi-Peril Crop exam or showing proof of passing the federal exam. If the federal exam was taken, the applicant must submit a paper application to the state.
Amendments of license are allowed for applicants that are in active status.
Applicants for the Variable Contracts line of authority must supply FINRA CRD number on application.
Variable Contracts applicants must actively hold or be applying for Producer Life license or must actively hold a Producer with combined Life and Health line.
Surplus Lines producers must submit a Surplus Lines Bond before their license can be issued. The form can be found using the link: sl_producer_bond.docx (maine.gov)
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions, please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
