Rules and Regulations
Applicant Can
- Submit renewals for individuals electronically.
- Submit renewals for major lines of authority.
- Submit renewals for limited lines of authority.
- Submit renewals for surplus lines for individuals.
- Late renew through NIPR's Resident License Renewal (RLR) Application.
- Print license electronically.
Applicant Cannot
- Submit a partial renewal. All Lines of Authority must be renewed.
Business Rules
Surplus Line Broker renewals will not be approved until the Insurance Division receives clearance from the taxation division that all taxes have been filed. The Rhode Island Taxation Division will provide confirmation to the Insurance Division.
Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.
Non-citizens of the U.S. must have a resident license for selling insurance in one of the fifty (50) U.S. states.
Rhode Island will allow reinstatement of a license if:
- Expiration date is greater than thirty (30) days and less than three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.
- Reinstatement must be processed through Resident Renewal (RLR) Application.
Applicant must hold an active renewable license in Rhode Island.
Applicants must have an active Producer license in their own resident state.
License is eligible for renewal starting 90 days prior to expiration date on PDB.
Applicant is allowed a grace period of 30 days after the expiration date to renew the license with no additional fees.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.

Renewal Periods
All License Classes
Renewal Period: Ninety (90) days prior to expiration.
Late Renewal Period: Thirty (30) days after expiration.
- 30 day grace period for expired licenses. Allows renewal with no additional fee.
Reinstatement Period: Thirty one (31) days to one year after license expired.
Continuing Education
- NIPR verifies compliance with the states CE requirement prior to allowing submission of a renewal application. You may select your resident state on the following link: Verify My CE to view your CE transcript and determine whether the state has updated your status to compliant in their system and on what date. It generally takes up to 72 hours from the compliance date for the status to be updated in our system.
- CE is not required for all Adjusters, Motor Vehicle Damage Appraisers, Surplus Line Brokers, Title Insurance, Reinsurance Intermediary Broker and Reinsurance Intermediary Manager Licenses.
