Business Rules
Applicant must pass the required state exam for the selected lines for new license or amended license.
Applicant is exempt from license exam if the Inactive status of previous resident license is within 90 days from date of the Rhode Island resident license application or if the resident Rhode Island license and requested line of authority (LOA) they are applying for is inactive within the past year.
All Rhode Island residents must provide a certified background check (BCI). For additional information, please visit www.riag.ri.gov and choose the "Information on Background Checks" link.
Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.
Non-citizens of the U.S. must e-mail proof of eligibility to work in the U.S to the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation to dbr.inslic@dbr.ri.gov.
Electronic applications will only be issued for a two (2) year license term.
Applicants with an active non-resident license in Rhode Island who have relocated to Rhode Island do not need to reapply. Send an email to dbr.inslic@dbr.ri.gov with updated resident information and your request will be reviewed by the Rhode Island Insurance Division.
Applicants must not have an active non-resident license in Rhode Island.
Applicant must provide a valid business email address.
Rhode Island will allow reinstatement of a license if:
- Expiration date is greater than thirty (30) days and less than three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.
- Reinstatement must be processed through Resident License Renewal (RLR) Application.
Applicants for the variable line of authority (LOA) must supply FINRA CRD number on application.
Applicants for motor vehicle damage appraiser licensing must take and pass the Rhode Island Appraiser exam prior to applying for the license. Applicants should call PearsonVue at 800-274-3739 or visit www.pearsonvue.com/ri/insurance for additional information about exam locations and hours, and to schedule your exam. Rhode Island examination content outlines can be found here.
Applicants for the Reinsurance license classes are required to hold active Insurance Producer license prior to applying and must select both single lines of casualty and property, and both single lines of life and accident and health or sickness.
All resident insurance producers that are selling, soliciting or negotiating insurance are required to carry and maintain E&O insurance, pursuant to Rhode Island Gen Laws § 27-2.4-23. Evidence is not required to be furnished.
Rhode Island only allows amendments to a license if license is active status.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
Please choose your license type and line(s) of authority (LOA) carefully. Because the electronic application is 100% user driven, the Rhode Island Insurance Division will not honor a refund request if you apply for the wrong license by accident, if you apply for the same license more than once (back-to-back), or if you apply for the wrong LOA. If you do not see the line(s) of authority that you expect to see because you took an exam, please do not apply for a random LOA because it's available to you. It takes 3-5 days for the exam results to be reported to NIPR and when those results are reported, you will be able to apply for the applicable LOA.
