Rules and Regulations
Applicant Can
- Submit initial license for individuals electronically.
- Submit major lines of authority.
- Submit limited lines of authority.
- Submit surplus lines for individuals.
- Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
- Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License ( NRL ) Application.
- Print license electronically.
Business Rules
Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.
Non-citizens of the U.S. must have a resident license for selling insurance in one of the fifty (50) U.S. states.
Electronic applications will only be issued for a two (2) year license term.
Applicants must have an active producer license in their own resident state.
Applicant must provide a valid business email address.
Rhode Island will allow reinstatements of a license if:
- Status is not active with an expired status reason.
- Expiration date is greater than thirty (30) days and less than three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.
- Reinstatement must be processed through Non-Resident Renewal (NRR) Application.
Applicants for the Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority (LOA) must supply FINRA CRD number on application.
Applicants for Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser licensing must take and pass the Rhode Island Appraiser exam and must also provide a certified background check from their resident state. Visit the state website for information regarding PearsonVue testing services.
If applying for Emergency Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser license the applicant cannot actively hold Public Adjuster, Independent Adjuster, or Company Adjuster Licenses.
Applicant for Surplus Line Broker license type must hold or apply for Property and Casualty in Rhode Island.
Applicants for the Reinsurance license classes are required to hold both an active Insurance Producer and reciprocating Reinsurance license in applicant's resident state prior to applying. All applications will defer to the state for review.
Applicants that apply for Reinsurance Intermediary Broker and Reinsurance Intermediary Manager must select both single lines of Casualty and Property, or both single lines of Life and Accident and Health or Sickness.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse . The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
