Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license for business entities electronically.
  • Submit for major lines of authority.
  • Submit for limited lines of authority.
  • Submit surplus lines for business entities.
  • Can add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Can reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Resident License (RL) Application.

Applicant Cannot

  • Print license electronically.

Business Rules

  • Business entity's license number is state specific ID.

  • Applicant must be one of the following legal business types:
    • Corporation
    • Partnership
    • Limited Liability Company LLC
    • Limited Liability Partnership LLP
  • Partnership applicants must submit registration paperwork prior to application approval.

  • All business types must be registered with Corporations Division.

  • Applicants applying as a Limited Liability Company must identify on application all of the owners with 10% interest or more, partners, officers and directors.

  • Applicant moving from another state to Michigan may apply for a resident license if they surrender previous state license within 90 days.

  • Applicants for the variable line of authority (LOA) must supply FINRA CRD number on application.

  • Applicants applying for Surplus Lines must have a Producer that is licensed in Michigan for Surplus Lines and property and casualty prior to applying for surplus lines license.

  • Resident Producer applicants that apply for or currently holds active Property and Casualty LOAs may not apply for Personal Lines license in Michigan.

  • At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application.

  • The DRLP(s) must be licensed for the LOA's applied for by the business entity applicant and must be submitted prior to the business entity application.

  • A Michigan physical address is required in the business address for all agency applicants.

  • Michigan Business Entity Licenses are Perpetual, except Surplus Lines (SL) which renews annually. Should the line become inactive applicants may reinstate the license through the resident licensing application.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via 

    NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents are stated as follows and may be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax:
    • A written statement explaining the circumstances.
    • A copy of the official document which demonstrates the resolution of the charges or any final judgment.
  • Michigan does not discuss pending applications with anyone except the applicant. Applicants must call or submit an e-mail to the state directly to obtain the status of a pending application. Please allow 10-14 business days to review the transaction and provide a response or request for additional information. If you have not received an update within this time frame you may contact the state directly to request a status and determine if additional documentation is required.   • Prior to filing an application applicant's with conviction histories are strongly encouraged to review Chapter 12 of the Michigan Insurance Code and the Guiding Principles found Michigan's state website for complete information on license eligibility.

To document licensure, companies should make a screen print of the producer's license status from the DIFS Insurance License Locator or from NIPR'S Producer Database (PDB).
