Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license for individuals electronically.
  • Submit for major lines of authority.
  • Submit for limited lines of authority.
  • Submit surplus lines for individuals.
  • Can add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Can reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License (NRL) Application.

Applicant Cannot

  • Print licenses electronically.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

  • Individual's license number is the National Producer Number (NPN).

  • Applicants who are currently employed by, own stock in, are an officer or director of, or are in any other manner connected with a funeral establishment, mortuary, or cemetery cannot hold an insurance license in Michigan except the limited life license.

  • Non-citizens of the U.S. must have a resident license for selling insurance in one of the fifty (50) U.S. states.

  • Applicants are allowed to use P.O. Boxes for mailing addresses. A physical address is required in the residence or home address only.

  • Applicants must supply CRD # on application when applying for Variable Annuities.

  • Non-Resident Counselor applicants must be licensed for the requested lines in their resident state.

  • Applicants for a non-resident Surplus Lines license must hold an active non-resident license for Property & Casualty in Michigan prior to applying for Surplus Lines.

  • Applicant must provide every individual's birth date listed on the application.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via 

    NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents are stated as follows and may be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax:
    • A written statement explaining the circumstances.
    • A certified copy of the official document which demonstrates the resolution of the charges.
    • Any final judgment.
  • Please include on any and all correspondence:

    • Name
    • SSN / FEIN
    • NIPR transaction number
  • If submitting application for additional qualifications within thirty (30) days of first application, must contact NIPR at (855) 674-6477 to delete first application ID. Michigan will rely on verification of applicant's resident license through the Producer Database (PDB) in lieu of original letter of certification.

  • Michigan does not discuss pending applications with anyone except for the applicant. Applicants must call or submit an e-mail to the state directly to obtain the status of a pending application. Please allow 14-21 business days to review the transaction and provide a response or request for additional information. If you have not received an update within this time frame you may contact the state directly to request a status and determine if additional documentation is required.   • Prior to filing an application applicant's with conviction histories are strongly encouraged to review Chapter 12 of the Michigan Insurance Code and the Guiding Principles found on Michigan's state website for complete information on license eligibility.

To document licensure, companies should make a screen print of the producer's license status from the DIFS Insurance License Locator or from NIPR'S Producer Database (PDB).
