Applicant Can
- Submit initial license application for business entities electronically.
- Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
- Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Resident License Application.
- Print License electronically.
Applicant Cannot
- Submit surplus lines for business entities.
Business Rules
Applicant must provide a valid business email address.
Applicants are not required, as a condition of licensure, to be registered by the South Dakota Secretary of State. Business entities may be required to register with the Secretary of State under their corporation statutes. They may be contacted through the state website.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions, please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
At least one ‘Owner’ must be supplied on the application and ownership percentage must total 100%.
Business entity applicants applying for Managing General Agent must actively hold a Business Entity license prior to applying.
The following license classes may reapply one (1) year after license expiration date:

The following license classes may reapply the day after expiration date:
- Discount Medical Plan
- Independent Review Organization
- Managed Care Contractor
- Managing General Agent
- Third Party Administrator

Rental Car and Travel Retailer applicants may reapply at anytime if license status reason is Inactive.
Applicants that have a status reason of Voluntary Surrender may reapply at any time.
If applicant's license status reason is Revoked or Suspended, application is not allowed. Please contact the South Dakota Division of Insurance directly at sdinsurance@state.sd.us.
