Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit renewal application for business entities electronically.
  • Late renew through NIPR's Non-Resident Renewal Application.
  • Print license electronically.

Applicant Cannot

  • Submit renewals for surplus lines for business entities.
  • Submit partial renewals.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must provide a valid business email address.

  • Applicant cannot renew earlier than 90 days prior to license expiration date.

  • Managing General Agent renewal applicant must have an active Business Entity license on the Producer Database.

  • At least one ‘Owner’ must be supplied on the application and ownership percentage must total 100%.

  • Applicant must renew the license before applying for additional lines/ amending.

  • Applicants that have a status reason of Voluntary Surrender may reapply at any time.

  • The following license classes may reapply one year after license expiration date:

    • Business Entity
    • Portable Electronics
  • The following license classes must submit reapplication starting the day after expiration date:

    • Case Management Plan
    • Discount Medical Plan
    • Independent Review Organization
    • Managed Care Contractor
    • Managing General Agent
    • Third Party Administrator
    • Third Party Administrator Registration
    • Utilization Review Organization
  • Case Management Plan licenses are not eligible for late renewal. Please reapply at https://dlr.sd.gov/workers_compensation/forms/mcapp.pdf 

  • If applicants license status reason is Revoked or Suspended, application is not allowed. Please contact the South Dakota Division of Insurance directly at sdinsurance@state.sd.us.

  • Case Management Plan -  Applicants must submit required documentation as required by South Dakota. Please visit

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
