Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license application for individuals electronically.
  • Submit surplus lines for individuals.
  • Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application.
  • License printing available electronically.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

  • Applicant must provide a valid business email address.

  • Applicants applying for the Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority (LOA) must supply a FINRA Central Registry Depository (CRD) number on the application.  If you need to verify your CRD number you may use the Broker Search feature found on the FINRA website.

  • Applicants applying for Managing General Agent must actively hold a South Dakota Insurance Producer license prior to applying.

  • Surplus Lines Broker applicants must hold an active Surplus Lines license in the resident state.

  • Portable Electronics - Applicants must submit required documentation as required by South Dakota Codified Law 58-47-16. Please visit Division of Insurance Forms for more information.

  • Bail Bonds Producer and Bail Bonds Runner – Applicants must submit fingerprint-based background check and required documentation as required by South Dakota. Please visit Division of Insurance Forms for more information.

  • Applicants that have a status reason of Voluntary Surrender may reapply at any time.

  • The following license classes may reapply one (1) year after license expiration date:
    • Insurance Producer 
    • Surplus Lines Broker 
    • Portable Electronics 
  • The following license classes may reapply the day after expiration date.
    •  Managing General Agent 
  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions, please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
