Rules and Regulations
Applicant Can
- Submit renewals for business entities electronically.
- Submit renewals for major lines of authority.
- Submit renewals for limited lines of authority.
- Submit renewals for surplus lines for business entities.
- Late renew through NIPR's Non-Resident Renewal (NRR) Application.
- Print license electronically.
Applicant Cannot
- Submit a partial renewal. All Lines of Authority must be renewed.
Business Rules
Rhode Island licenses in Inactive status and expiration date greater than one year must apply for reissue.
Applicant cannot apply earlier than 90 days prior to license expiration date.
Renewal is determined by the expiration date of the license id. Late renewal applies after expiration date.
Rhode Island will allow reinstatement of a license if:
- Expiration date is greater than thirty (30) days and less than three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.
- Reinstatement must be processed through Non-Resident Renewal (NRR) Application.
Applicant must hold an active renewable license in Rhode Island.
Applicants must have an active producer license in their own resident state.
At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application and have an active resident or non-resident license in Rhode Island.
DRLP not required for Portable Electronics Broker, Third Party Administrator Certificate of Authority, Third Party Administrator Registered or Third Party Administrator Waiver Certificate license classes.
The DRLPs provided are not required to cumulatively cover the lines of authority (LOAs) on the application.
The following license classes expire annually on the last day of February: Third Party Administrator Certificate of Authority, Third Party Administrator Registered and Third Party Administrator Waiver Certificate licenses expired annually on the last day of February.
All renewal applications for Third Party Administrator Certificate of Authority, Third Party Administrator Registered and Third Party Administrator Waiver Certificate licenses must provide annual report form and annual filing fee to Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation, Insurance Division.
Surplus Line Broker renewals will not be approved until the Insurance Division receives clearance from the taxation division that all taxes have been filed. The Rhode Island Taxation Division will provide confirmation to the Insurance Division. For questions on tax filings, or to check if your tax filings are cleared, contact the Rhode Island Taxation Division at 401-574-8935.
License is eligible for renewal starting 90 days prior to expiration date on PDB.
Applicant is allowed a grace period of 30 days after the expiration date to renew the license with no additional fees.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
