Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit renewals for business entities electronically.
  • Submit renewals for major lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for limited lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for surplus lines for business entities.
  • Late renew through NIPR's Non-Resident Renewal (NRR) Application.
  • Renew partial lines.
  • Print license electronically.

Business Rules

  • There must be no serious:

    • Regulatory Information Retrieval System (RIRS) actions for the applicant since last renewal.
    • 1033 actions for the applicant since last renewal.
  • If so, please contact the state for assistance.

  • Applicant renewing Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority (LOA) must renew Life simultaneously within the same license class.

  • Applicant must provide at least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP). The DRLP(s) provided must hold active Authorized Person license in Puerto Rico and hold all lines of authority requested on the renewal application. The DRLP does not need to hold same license type as business entity request.

  • Business entity renewals for classes with lines of none must list DRLP that holds active Authorized Person. No lines of authority are validated.

  • Applicant renewing Authorized Representative must have an appointment with an insurer.

  • Applicants with license in voluntary surrender status must reapply through Non-Resident License (NRL) application.

  • Applicants with a resident license in Guam are unable to apply electronically for Puerto Rico licenses. Please contact Puerto Rico directly to apply for a license or amend.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.

Renewal Periods

All License Classes

Renewal Period:

  • Starts: Ninety (90) days prior to expiration date.
  • Ends: Expiration date.

Late Renewal Period:

  • Starts: One (1) day past expiration date.
  • Ends: One (1) month past expiration date.
