Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit renewals for business entities electronically.
  • Submit renewals for surplus lines for business entities.
  • Submit Non Resident Adjuster Renewal (NRAR) through Non Resident Renewal (NRR) application for business entities.
  • Late renew through NIPR's Non-Resident Renewal (NRR) Application.
  • Print Licenses Electronically.

Applicant Cannot

  • Submit renewals for major lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for limited lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for surplus lines for business entities.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be one of the following legal business types:

    • Corporation
    • Partnership
    • Limited Liability Company (LLC)
    • Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
    • Sole Proprietorship (only for limited lines travel business entity)
  • At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application and must be actively licensed as a resident or non-resident in North Carolina. This excludes Auto-Rental Limited License, Self-Service Storage Limited license and Portable Electronics. All DRLPs must be licensed if provided in the transaction.

  • Applicant must currently hold an active insurance producer License with Property and Casualty lines of authority (LOAs) in order to renew Surplus Lines Broker license unless resident state does not have such a requirement and will issue you a Surplus Lines Broker license without the insurance producer Property and Casualty license.

  • If an applicant applies for an initial license after the start of the renewal period, the applicant will not have a renewal available until the following year.

  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.

Renewal Periods

  • All license classes.
    • Renewal Period: Sixty (60) days prior to expiration date.
    • Late Renewal Period: Up to Sixty (60) days after expiration dates.
