Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit renewals for business entities electronically.
  • Submit renewals for major lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for limited lines of authority.
  • Submit renewals for Surplus Lines for business entities.
  • Submit partial renewals allowed.
  • Print licenses electronically.

Applicant Cannot

  • Reinstate through NIPR's Non-Resident Renewal Application.

Business Rules

  • Reinstatements are not allowed for business entities. Beginning the first day following the license expiration date, the business entity must apply as a new applicant through NIPR's Non-Resident License Application.

  • The following applies to the producer license class only:

    • At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer must be listed on the application.
      • All designated responsible producers must be actively licensed in the state on the producer database (resident or non-resident of Massachusetts).
      • All designated responsible producers provided on the business entity application must also be listed as members (affiliations). There may also be additional members listed outside of the designated responsible producers.
  • All members (affiliations) must have an active resident or non-resident license in the state on the producer database.

  • The members (affiliations) provided must cumulatively cover the lines of authority on the application.

  • All members listed for surplus lines brokers must be actively licensed as a resident or non-resident individual surplus lines broker in Massachusetts.

  • Applicant must currently hold an active producer license with property and casualty lines of authority in order to renew surplus lines broker license unless your resident state does not have such a requirement and will issue you a surplus lines broker license without the producer property and casualty license.

  • All phone and fax numbers entered on application, including submitter information, must follow these rules:

    • No lengths greater than ten (10) characters.
    • Numeric values only.
  • If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
