Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit a business entity license renewal application electronically.
  • Renew major and limited lines of authority (LOAs).
  • Submit a partial renewal.
  • Print a license electronically.

Applicant Cannot

  • Reinstate or renew an expired license.

Business Rules

  • Reinstatement: Reinstatement is not available for business entities. Beginning the first day after the license expiration date, the business entity must apply as a new applicant.

  • Producer License: At least one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be listed on the application.
    • DRLPs must be actively licensed in Massachusetts as resident or non-resident producers.
    • DRLPs listed on the business entity application must also be listed as affiliated members.
    • Additional members may be listed beyond the DRLPs
  • Affiliated members: All members must hold an active resident or non-resident license in Massachusetts. Members must collectively cover all lines of authority requested on the application.

  • Surplus Lines Broker: All members listed for a Surplus Lines Broker must be actively licensed as resident or non-resident individual Surplus Lines Brokers in Massachusetts. The applicant must hold an active Producer license with Property and Casualty lines of authority to renew a Surplus Lines Broker license, unless the resident state does not have this requirement and issues a Surplus Lines Broker license without the Producer Property and Casualty lines.

  • Motor Club: Business entity Motor Club applications may only be submitted by Motor Clubs. Business entity Motor Club licenses are not issued to business entities selling on behalf of a Motor Club.

  • Supporting Documentation: Applicants answering "Yes" to a background question must submit supporting documentation through NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. Supporting documents may also be submitted directly to the state by mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be submitted directly to the state.

    • Variable Life and Variable Annuity: Renewal applicants must provide a valid FINRA/CRD number. If the FINRA/CRD number provided is incorrect or invalid, the Variable lines will not be approved.
