License management
Apply for a license
To apply for a license in Massachusetts, visit LicenseHub.
If you can’t apply for the lines for which you have qualified, contact the state to verify that they have received the exams and any necessary pre-licensing education completion information. Also ensure that they have reported this to NIPR with the correct last name, social security number and date of birth.
Renew a license
To renew a license in Massachusetts, visit LicenseHub.
If you can’t renew a particular line offered via NIPR, verify that the line is actively held in your resident state. If the line is not held, you cannot request that line via NIPR.

Visit the Individual and Business Entity Licensing page of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) website.
Cancel or surrender a line of authority
To surrender a license or delete a line of authority, submit a written termination letter to the Massachusetts DOI at producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov. The letter should clearly state the request regarding the status of the license and include the licensee’s signature.
Information updates
Report a legal name change – individual or entity
To report a legal name change:
Individual: Visit LicenseHub.
Business Entity: Business entities must obtain Division approval before changing the business name on their Massachusetts license.
- Step 1: Request approval for the new business name from the Division of Insurance by emailing DOINameApproval@mass.gov.
- Step 2: Update the business name with the Massachusetts Secretary of State.
- Step 3: Once the name change is reflected on the MA Secretary of State’s website, email DOINameApproval@mass.gov to notify the Division. The Division will verify the updated name online and update the Massachusetts license accordingly.
Update contact information – individual or entity

- Business Entity: Business entities should email DOIRegistrationDocs@mass.gov to update their contact information.
Report changes to Affiliations or Designated Responsible Licensed Producers
To add or remove a Member or Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) on a Massachusetts Business Entity Producer License, complete the Business Entity Initial Application. In Massachusetts, all DRLPs are considered Members, so both changes are completed through the same application process. Entities will be charged a $75 state fee per member/DRLP.
Business entities with multiple resident licenses cannot submit these changes through NIPR. Email DOIRegistrationDocs@mass.gov for assistance from the Business Entity team.

Report changes to Owners, Officers, Partners or Directors
The Massachusetts DOI does not track changes to Partners, Owners, Officers or Directors.
This information will not be updated. If the record shows incorrect information, please contact the state to have ALL information removed.
Understand residency type changes
- Transitioning from non-resident to resident status: Licensees have 90 days to update their license without needing to take the Massachusetts exams. Prior to updating their license, they must terminate their previous resident license. The state verifies prior licensure through the NIPR Producer Database (PDB).
- Changing from resident to non-resident status: The producer is advised to contact the new residency state prior to cancelling the Massachusetts resident license. Typically, producers will be instructed to submit a written notification to the DOI’s Producer Licensing Department at producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov requesting that your license be placed in “Cancel – move from state” status. Once you have established your new resident license, you may request to reinstate your Massachusetts license as a non-resident license. Any remaining time on your Massachusetts license will be reactivated and converted to a non-resident license.

Insurance exam scores in Massachusetts are valid for 12 Months.

Massachusetts resident producers must complete continuing education (CE) to maintain an active license. Pearson Professional Assessments manages continuing education services for Massachusetts. Find Approved Courses.
- First renewal: 60 CE credits, including 3 Ethics credits.
Each subsequent three-year renewal: 45 CE credits, including 3 Ethics credits.
