License management
Apply for a license
To apply for a license in Massachusetts, visit LicenseHub.
If you can’t apply for the lines for which you have qualified, contact the state to verify that they have received the exams and any necessary pre-licensing education completion information. Also ensure that they have reported this to NIPR with the correct last name, social security number and date of birth.
Renew a license
To renew a license in Massachusetts, visit LicenseHub.
If you can’t renew a particular line offered via NIPR, verify that the line is actively held in your resident state. If the line is not held, you cannot request that line via NIPR.
Print a license
To print your license, access your state’s license print tool and follow the instructions on the page.

Visit the Individual and Business Entity Licensing page of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) website.
Cancel or surrender a line of authority

Information updates
Report a legal name change – individual or entity
To report a legal name change:
Individual: Visit LicenseHub.
Entity: Submit a name approval request to DOINameApproval@mass.gov. Once approved, the entity will need to change the filing with the Massachusetts Secretary of State and provide the DOI with a new Massachusetts Letter of Good Standing under the new name. The name change is completed once the DOI receives the Letter of Good Standing.
Update contact information – individual or entity
To update contact information for an insurance professional, visit the LicenseHub. Find more information on the contact update process on our Contact Change Request page.
Entities can also email producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov to update their contact information.
Report changes to Affiliations or Designated Responsible Licensed Producers
For changes related to affiliations or Designated Responsible Licensed Producers (DRLPs):
DRLPs: Visit the Massachusetts Adding/Deleting a Designated Responsible Licensed Producer to a Business Entity Producer License page for more information.
Members: Visit the Massachusetts Adding/Deleting a New Member to a Business Entity Producer License page for more information.
Report changes to Owners, Officers, Partners or Directors
The Massachusetts DOI does not track changes to Partners, Owners, Officers or Directors. For information, contact the Massachusetts Secretary of State.
Understand residency type changes
- Transitioning from non-resident to resident status: Licensees have 90 days to update their license without needing to take the Massachusetts exams. Prior to updating their license, they must terminate their previous resident license. The state verifies prior licensure through the NIPR Producer Database (PDB).
- Changing from resident to non-resident status: Submit a written notification to the DOI’s Producer Licensing Department or call 617-521-7794 and select Option 3. The Massachusetts license will be terminated once residency in the new state is confirmed.
If a licensee becomes licensed in a new state but wishes to remain licensed in Massachusetts as a non-resident, they must notify the Producer Licensing Department once they obtain a new resident license in their new state. Any remaining time on their Massachusetts license will be reactivated and converted to a non-resident license.
