Rules and Regulations
Applicant Can
- Submit initial license for business entities electronically.
- Submit major lines of authority.
- Submit limited lines of authority.
- Submit surplus lines for business entities.
- Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
- Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Resident License (RL) Application.
- Print license electronically.
Business Rules
Reinstatements through the Resident License (RL) Application are allowed if license is inactive for over one (1) year and one (1) day after expiration date.
Viatical settlement brokers must hold an active Maryland insurance producer License with the Life line of authority
Variable applicants must also hold Life within requested license class.
Non-citizens of the U.S. must have a resident license for selling insurance in one of the fifty (50) U.S. states.
Surplus lines brokers, insurance producer Title, Adviser and Third Party Administrator license applicants are deferred. The transaction will be reviewed by the state. Please submit your original bond directly to the Maryland Insurance Administration to have the application resolved.
Motor Vehicle Rental Company and Motor Vehicle Rental Franchise applicants are deferred. Please submit all required documents directly to the Maryland Insurance Administration to have the application resolved.
Reinstatements for Viatical Settlement Brokers and Providers re-applications are allowed the day after expiration date.
Insurance Producer Title applicants must email a copy of the original bond(s) or other required documentation directly to the Maryland Insurance Administration. The email address is producerlicensing.mia@maryland.gov. Please visit the Maryland Title for additional information.
Applicants with a Cancelled license status must contact Maryland Insurance Administration directly if attempting to re-apply.
At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application, excluding motor vehicle rental corporation, motor vehicle rental franchisee, portable electronics, viatical settlement broker, viatical settlement provider or third party administrators.
The DRLPs provided on the application must have an active resident or non-resident license and must cumulatively cover all LOAs requested on the application.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.
