State Requirements

General Requirements:

• Applicant must renew all active lines of authority on the license. Partial renewals are not allowed.
• To surrender a line of authority, submit the West Virginia Agent/Agency License Surrender Form directly to the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.

Designated Home State Requirements:

• Applicants selecting a Designated Home State must hold an active non-resident adjuster license in the designated state.
• Applicants who hold an active resident adjuster license in any state may not designate a home state.
• Applicants whose resident state licenses adjusters must hold an active resident adjuster license. An active resident producer (non-adjuster) license does not satisfy this requirement and may not be used to renew an adjuster license.
• Applicants whose resident state does not license adjusters may use an active non-resident adjuster license as their Designated Home State license.
• If the Designated Home State license is inactive, the applicant must select another non-resident state where an active adjuster license is held.
• Applicants may change the Designated Home State currently on record during renewal.
• The Designated Home State selected on the application must match the state identified for continuing education compliance.
• Applicants may select West Virginia as the Designated Home State while renewing a non-resident West Virginia adjuster license.
  • Applicants selecting West Virginia as the Designated Home State must be compliant with West Virginia continuing education requirements prior to renewal.
• Public Adjusters may not select an Adjuster Designated Home State (DHS).

Additional Documentation Requirements:

• When renewing a license, applicants should only answer “Yes” to a background question if there has been a new incident, charge, or conviction since the last application or renewal.
• If the applicant answers “Yes” to any background question, supporting documentation must be submitted within thirty (30) days of the application date or the application will be declined.
• Documents should be submitted electronically through NIPR’s Attachments Warehouse. Documents may also be submitted to the state via email or mail.
  • Required documentation includes:
    • A written statement explaining the circumstances
    • A copy of the official document demonstrating the resolution of the charges or final judgment
    • All correspondence must include the applicant’s name, SSN, NIPR Transaction Number, and National Producer Number (NPN), if available
• Applicants renewing the Crop line of authority must submit certification showing they passed the Crop Adjuster Proficiency Program examination approved by the Federal Risk Management Agency.
• Company Adjuster and Independent Adjuster applicants changing their Designated Home State to West Virginia must complete fingerprinting within sixty (60) days after applying. The West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner service code is 228NS5. Visit the West Virginia Licensing and Education Division for fingerprinting instructions.

Non-Citizen Requirements:

• Applicants who are not U.S. citizens, including Canadian citizens holding a U.S. resident license, must provide proof of authorization to work in the United States to the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.
