Rules and Regulations
Applicant Can
- Submit initial license application for individuals electronically.
- Submit surplus lines for individuals.
- Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
- Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Resident License Application.
- Print License electronically.
Business Rules
- Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old or older as determined from the applicant's date of birth.
- Exception - Bail Bonds Producer and Bail Bonds Runner applicants must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
Applicant must provide a valid business email address.
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. Please submit legible copies of documents establishing your work eligibility (e.g., Work Visa/Green Card) to the NIPR Attachments Warehouse - Additional Licensing Documents (ALD) section.
Applicants applying for the Variable Life and Variable Annuity line of authority (LOA) must supply a FINRA Central Registry Depository (CRD) number on the application. If you need to verify your CRD number you may use the Broker Search feature found on FINRA's website.
Applicant must currently hold or be applying for life if they are applying for variable.
Applicant must actively hold or apply for Life with Variable Life and Variable Annuity.

Bail Bonds Producer and Bail Bonds Runner - Applicants must submit fingerprint based background check and required documentation as required by South Dakota. Please visit Division of Insurance Forms for more information.
Resident Attorney - Applicants must submit required documentation as required by South Dakota. Please visit Division of Insurance Forms for more information.
If the applicant’s former home state license has been cancelled for less than ninety (90) days, applicant may be eligible for an exam exemption based on previous lines of authority (LOAs) held.
Applicants that have a status reason of voluntary surrender may reapply at any time.

Surplus Line Broker applicants must actively hold BOTH single lines of Insurance Producer Property and Casualty on the PDB.
Applicants applying for Managing General Agent must actively hold a resident Insurance Producer license.
If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions, please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.
