State Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants cannot apply for an Iowa non-resident license if Iowa is their resident state.

Address Requirements

• Business addresses cannot contain a P.O. Box or Private Mailbox (PMB).
• P.O. Boxes and Private Mailboxes may only be used as mailing addresses.

Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) Requirements

• Unless an exception is identified below, applicants must identify exactly one DRLP.
• The DRLP must hold an active resident or non-resident license in Iowa.
• License-specific DRLP requirements include:
  • Business Entity Surplus Lines Producer: The DRLP must hold active Iowa Property, Casualty, and Surplus Lines qualifications.
  • Public Adjuster: The DRLP must hold an active Iowa Public Adjuster license and maintain the required minimum $20,000 bond.
  • Independent Adjuster: The DRLP must hold an active Iowa Independent Adjuster license.
  • Appraiser: The DRLP must hold an active Iowa Appraiser license.
  • Preneed Seller: Each DRLP must hold an active Iowa Sales Agent license. Preneed Seller applicants may identify more than one DRLP.
• Third Party Administrator applicants are not required to identify a DRLP.

Surplus Lines Requirements

• Business Entity Surplus Lines Producer applicants must hold active Iowa Property and Casualty qualifications.
• Applicants must also hold an active Surplus Lines license in their resident state.

Third Party Administrator Requirements

• Applicants must complete the Iowa TPA Application Checklist and submit all required supporting documentation.
• Applicants must provide evidence of active, current surety bond coverage.

Background Questions and Documentation

• Applicants who answer Yes to a background question must provide:
  • A written statement explaining the circumstances.
  • Official court, regulatory, or administrative documents showing the current status or final resolution of the matter.
  • Any additional documentation requested by the Iowa Insurance Division.
• Supporting documents should be submitted electronically through NIPR’s Attachments Warehouse. Documents may also be submitted directly to the Iowa Insurance Division by mail, email, or fax.

License Expiration

• Insurance Producer, Business Entity Surplus Lines Producer, Public Adjuster, and Preneed Seller licenses are not eligible for late renewal. After expiration, applicants must submit a new Non-Resident License application.
• Third Party Administrator, Independent Adjuster, and Appraiser licenses may be late renewed through the Non-Resident Renewal application for up to one year after expiration. Applicable late-renewal fees apply.
