Rules and Regulations

Applicant Can

  • Submit initial license for business entities electronically.
  • Submit major lines of authority.
  • Submit limited lines of authority.
  • Apply for non-resident Adjuster licensing.
  • Add lines of authority (amend) to an existing active license.
  • Reinstate/reapply through NIPR's Non-Resident License (NRL) Application.
  • Print Licenses Electronically.

Applicant Cannot

  • Submit surplus lines for business entities.

Business Rules

  • Applicant must be one of the following legal business types:
    • Corporation
    • Partnership
    • Limited Liability Company (LLC)
    • Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
  • All Variable Life and Variable Annuity applicants must hold an active Insurance Producer with Life line of authority or be applying for a Life line of authority at the same time.

  • At least one Designate Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application
    • Exclusions – the following license types to do not require a DRLP and can be left blank:
      • Portable Electronics
      • Independent Adjuster
      • Public Adjuster
      • Third Party Administrator
      • Managing General Agent
  • Each Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) provided on the application must be actively licensed in Idaho at the time the application is submitted.

  • Designated Responsible Licensed Producer(s) (DRLP) must cumulatively cover all Lines of Authority (LOAs) requested on the application at the time the application is submitted. This applies to:
    • Insurance Producer (PDB Code: 3)
    • Bail Bond Agent (PDB Code: 58)
    • Life Settlement Broker (PDB Code: 1390)
    • Life Settlement Provider (PDB Code: 3652)
  • If ‘adjuster’ applicant chooses to provide one or more Designated Responsible Licensed Producers (DRLP) on the application, each DRLP entered must hold same license class as that being applied for by the business. This applies to:
    • Independent Adjuster
    • Public Adjuster
  • Bail Bond Agent applicants must visit the following link and submit original bond in the amount of $15,000 and the COMPLETED AND SIGNED appointment form to: Idaho Dept of Insurance, P.O. Box 83720, Boise ID, 83720-0043

  • Applicants for Life Settlement Broker or Life Settlement Provider must have active Insurance Producer License with Life line of authority.

  • Applicants for all license types will be allowed to late renew for up to one year past license expiration date. The status reason will be Expired. After one year past the expiration date, applicants will be allowed to reapply through initial licensing application.

  • Applicants with a status reason of Voluntary Surrender must reapply as a new applicant regardless of expiration date.

  • Applicants applying for ‘Travel’ line of authority - please provide the department with a list of licensed individuals and business entities that will be covered under this Limited Lines Travel Insurance Producer license. Please use the Registration, Authority to Act Under Agency License form to register agents and business entities with your license - click here

  • All Third Party Administrator applicants applying for a Non-Resident license are required to submit the following: click here. Documents can be uploaded to the NIPR Attachments Warehouse. Applicants who can’t submit electronically should email to doi.tpa@doi.idaho.gov.   • All instances of phone number must be a valid 10 digit phone number (extensions are allowed).

  • Managing General Agent applicants must hold an active Insurance Producer with Property and Casualty lines of authority.
