License management

Apply for a license

To apply for a license in New York, visit LicenseHub.
If you can’t apply for the lines for which you have qualified, contact the state to verify that they have received the exams and any necessary pre-licensing education completion information. Also ensure that they have reported this to NIPR with the correct last name, social security number and date of birth. 

Renew a license

To renew a license in New York, visit LicenseHub.

If you can’t renew a particular line offered via NIPR, verify that the line is actively held in your resident state. If the line is not held, you cannot request that line via NIPR.

Cancel or surrender a line of authority

To surrender a license or delete a line of authority, submit a written request to the State and include copies of the license(s) with your request. If copies aren’t available, clearly state this in your letter.  

You can also request a Letter of Clearance from the New York DFS.

Report changes to Affiliations or Designated Responsible Licensed Producers

Changes related to affiliations or Designated Responsible Licensed Producers (DRLPs) can be done during the renewal process. If you need to add a DRLP outside of renewal, you’ll need to complete and submit an additional application.  

Applications can be found on the Supplemental Application to Add/Remove Sublicensees page on the New York DFS website.  

Report changes to Owners, Officers, Partners or Directors

To report changes to Owners, Officers, Partners or Directors of a licensed entity, submit a letter detailing the updates. If you need to add a new sublicensee, you’ll need to complete and submit an additional application.

Understand residency type changes 

For residency type changes, visit the Online Producer Services portal on the New York DFS website. 

  • Transitioning from non-resident to resident status: Start by updating your address online and selecting New York as your new resident state. You can also submit an address change form along with a signed statement requesting the change to New York. Once the New York license is approved as the Resident state, applicant can update prior home state to be a Non Resident license.

  • Changing from resident to non-resident status: First, confirm the move with your new resident state. Be aware NY Resident Licensees will be required to obtain a letter of Clearance from NY.  This can be requested via NY LINX.  Please find additional information on NY’s website here. Once your new resident state is active, you can update your address New York license to be a Non Resident license-you have 30 days to provide the new home state license.
