NIPR Announces 2027 Planned CEO Succession

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 18, 2026) — As the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) celebrates 30 years of service to state insurance regulators and the insurance industry, the organization’s Board of Directors has announced a planned leadership transition. Chief Executive Officer Karen Stakem Hornig will retire in June 2027, with Chief Product and Technology Officer Eric Saul set to succeed her as CEO.

For three decades, NIPR has delivered cost-effective, streamlined, and uniform licensing and compliance solutions nationwide. Hornig’s 12-year tenure marked a period of significant transformation, fostering a “people-first” culture that expanded partnerships, advanced technology, and positioned NIPR for long-term success.

“Serving as CEO during such an important time in NIPR’s history has been an honor,” said Hornig. “This leadership transition is the result of intentional planning by the Board and reflects NIPR’s commitment to long-term stability and governance best practices. I am proud of the organization we have built and confident that NIPR is entering its next chapter from a position of strength.”

Eric Saul was unanimously selected as Hornig’s successor following a multi-year, Board-led succession planning process. He has played a key role in modernizing NIPR’s technical foundation, enhancing customer experience and advancing innovation.

“Karen has provided visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to this organization during her tenure,” said NIPR Board President and South Dakota Division of Insurance Director Larry Deiter. “And Eric’s deep understanding of our mission and ability to drive strategic progress position him to lead NIPR with focus, continuity, and strong momentum.”

“I am grateful for the Board’s confidence and value the thoughtful succession process. Under Karen’s leadership, NIPR has grown into a mature organization with a clear strategy and exceptional people. I step into this role with deep respect for what has been built and a strong commitment to continuity,” said Saul. “Our focus remains unchanged—serving our regulators, industry partners, and stakeholders with excellence while continuing to modernize, innovate, and invest in the people and platforms that will carry NIPR into the future.”
