Business Entities renewing their North Carolina license should be entering their FEIN (without the dash) as the license number instead of the state issued license number in the license number field. The renewing business entity must also enter the FEIN (with or without the dash) in the FEIN field as well.

Business Rules (Individual)

Producer licenses with the following lines of authority (LOAS) are perpetual and not required to submit renewal requests.  North Carolina will recertify nonresident producer licenses by reviewing their license status in their home state. Producers whose home state licenses are in good standing will have their nonresident licenses extended.

  • Casualty
  • Personal lines
  • Variable Life & Variable Annuity Products
  • Medicare Supplement / Long Term Care

Applications that are pended by the state for additional information or requirements will be declined by the state if no response is received from the applicant within thirty (30) days of the state's request. Other supporting documentation not related to background questions may be faxed to the state.

Applicant must provide a valid business email.

Surplus lines applicants must have an active Producer license with the Property Line of Authority (LOA) prior to renewing Surplus Lines.

The expiration date for Self-Employed Insurance Adjuster, Company/Independent Firm Adjuster, and Public Adjuster refers only to the date when Continuing Education (CE) credits are due. All license types renew their license on March 31st every year or on August 31st every year for surplus lines.

If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.

Business Rules (Business Entity)

Applicant must be one of the following legal business types:

  • Corporation
  • Partnership
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC)
  • Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
  • Sole Proprietorship (only for Limited Lines Travel Business Entity)

Applications that are pended by the state for additional information or requirements will be declined by the state if no response is received from the applicant within thirty (30) days of the state's request. At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application and must be actively licensed as a resident or non-resident in North Carolina. This excludes Auto-Rental Limited License, Self-Service Storage Limited license and Portable Electronics.

At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer provided on the Public Adjuster Business Entity application must be actively licensed as a Public Adjuster in North Carolina at the time the application is submitted. 

If an entity obtains an initial license after the start of the renewal period, the applicant will not have a renewal available until the following year.
