Primary Rules (Individual)

Renewal Period (Individual)

License Class Renewal Period Begins Renewal Period Ends Late Renewal
Surplus Lines Broker, Producer Ninety (90) days prior to expiration date. Expiration date. Up to one (1) year past expiration date.
Adviser Ninety (90) days prior to expiration. Expiration date. Up to ninety (90) days after expiration date.
Viatical Settlement Broker Ninety (90) days prior to expiration. Expiration date. Up to sixty (60) days after expiration date.

Business Rules (Individual)

Applicant’s license number and National Producer Number (NPN) must match current Producer Database (PDB) record for resident state.

Applicant must provide a valid country code.

Adviser applicants will be approved once the state verifies that the bond currently on file is still active.

Title applicants will be approved once the state verifies that bond(s) on file in the correct amount are still active. If exempt from the bond or education requirement(s) please submit documentation supporting exemption directly to the Maryland Insurance Administration to have the application resolved.

Applicant cannot late renew an inactive license. Applicant must reinstate or reapply through NIPR’s NIPR’s Non-Resident License Application.

There must be no serious:

  • Regulatory Information Retrieval System (RIRS) actions for the applicant since last renewal.
  • Special Activities Database (SAD) actions for the applicant since last renewal.

If so, application will defer. Please contact the state for assistance.

With the exception of 'other' lines, applicant must have an equivalent active resident license when applying for a non-resident license.

Self-Service Storage renewal applications must be submitted via a paper application directly to state.

Applicant must hold an active Maryland Producer License with the Property and Casualty lines of authority to renew a Surplus Lines License.

Applicant must hold an active Maryland Producer License with the Life line of authority to renew a Viatical Settlement Broker License.

Applicant must hold an active Adviser License with the Life line of authority to renew an Adviser License with the Variable line of authority.

If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail or fax. All other required documentation must be forwarded directly to the state.

Late renewals are allowed for a period of one (1) year for producers and surplus lines brokers. Applicants may begin to late renew the day after license expiration date. After one (1) year, applicant must use the Non-Resident Licensing Application to reinstate.

For Adviser’s the late renewal cycle is from July 1st to September 30th with a late penalty fee. After ninety (90) days, applicant must use the Non-Resident Licensing Application to reinstate.

Viatical Settlement Broker’s have up to sixty (60) days after expiration date to renew the license without a late fee.   After sixty (60) days the broker must use the Nonresident Licensing Application to reinstate.

Late renewals are allowed for a period of one (1) year for producers, surplus lines brokers, public adjusters, motor vehicle rental corporation, portable electronics and motor vehicle rental franchise license classes. Applicants may begin to late renew the day after license expiration date. After one (1) year, applicant must use Non-Resident Licensing (NRL) Application.

Late renewal cycle is from July 1st to September 30th with a late penalty fee for third party administrators (TPA). After ninety (90) days, applicant must use Nonresident License Application to reinstate.

Viatical settlement broker and provider applicants have up to sixty (60) days after expiration date to renew license without a late fee. After the sixty (60) days applicant must use the Nonresident License Application to reinstate.
