Renewal Period (Individual)

Business Rules (Individual)

Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years old as determined from the applicant's date of birth.

Applicant's name, Tax ID, license number, birth date, state of residence, and National Producer Number (NPN) must match current Producer Database (PDB) record for resident state.

Applicant's mailing address must be either his or her residence address or a personal P.O. Box.

Applicant must provide a valid country code and business email.

Applicant may not renew a license in their own resident state.

Applicant can renew their license through NRR through the date the license expires.

Licenses that need to late renew after the expiration date must renew directly through the California’s Department of Insurance website at
https://www.insurance.ca.gov/0200-industry/0010-producer-online-services/

Non Resident Insurance Producer Life Only- Agent must be actively held in order to renew Resident Insurance Producer Variable Contracts or renew simultaneously.

Both Life Only Agent and Accident and Health Agent lines must be renewed at the same time.  Partial renewal for the lines is not allowed. 

Both Property Broker-Agent and Casualty Broker-Agent lines must be renewed at the same time.  Partial renewal for the lines is not allowed.

Applicant may not renew Personal lines if Property and Casualty is actively held.

An active Life Only-Agent license is required to renew Brokering Life Settlement line of authority.

Property Broker – Agent and Casualty Broker – Agent are required to renew Surplus Lines Broker.

Property Broker – Agent and Casualty Broker – Agent are required to renew Special Lines SL Broker.

All Variable Contracts renewal applicants must provide FINRA CRD number.

When amending license or adding lines of authority (LOAs), an applicant can only be granted a one (1) year license if they are in their second part of their two (2) year cycle (i.e., half way through or only have one (1) year left before their renewal).

There must be no serious:

  • Regulatory Information Retrieval System (RIRS) actions for the applicant since last renewal.
  • Special Activities Database (SAD) actions for the applicant since last renewal.

If so, please contact the state for assistance.

California licensees must complete and submit their own renewal application. As stated in section 1652(a) of the California Insurance Code, applicants must declare, under penalty of perjury, that the contents of the application are true and correct.

Criminal Convictions: For the purposes of the California application, "convicted" occurs if applicant was ever found guilty by verdicts of a judge or jury; and/or ever entered a plea of guilty, nolo contendre or no contest. All convictions must be disclosed, even if the charges were later dismissed or expunged, the guilty plea was withdrawn pursuant to Penal Code Section 1203.4, or placed on probation, received a suspended sentence or just ordered to pay a fine.

Driving Under the Influence: Disclose all driving related misdemeanors including, but not limited to, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving without a valid license, or driving with a suspended or revoked license. Failure to disclose all convictions can result in a denied application. Juvenile offenses tried in juvenile court may be excluded.

Applicant applying for variable contracts must hold an active life license in the resident state.

Applicant may not hold a personal lines license and apply for a property broker agent and casualty license, or a limited lines automobile insurance agent license.

Property broker agent and casualty broker agent may not apply for personal lines.

All individual applicants applying for a California license should disregard the 'Agency or Business Entity Affiliations' page within the uniform application.

If applicant responds "yes" to one of the background questions please submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR's Attachments Warehouse. The documents may also be submitted to the state via mail, email, or fax.

Name of business entity must be approved by California prior to submission of license application.

Sole proprietorship may not apply electronically using the business entity uniform application, they must apply as an individual. Section 6 - California NIPR product participation.

California licensees must complete and submit their own renewal application. As stated in section 1652(a) of the California Insurance Code, applicants must declare, under penalty of perjury, that the contents of the application are true and correct.

Section 1729.2 of the California Insurance Code requires a licensee to notify the department within thirty (30) days of the date the licensee learns of any change in their background information. For further clarification regarding this requirement, including the definition of background information, please refer to CIC 1729.2 or the California Department of Insurance website.

At least one (1) Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) must be provided on the application and have a resident or non-resident license in California.

The DRLPs provided on the producer and surplus lines application must cumulatively cover the LOAs on the application.

The Designated Responsible Producer or Producers cumulatively must have equivalent non-resident license and cumulatively hold the requested LOA’s in California.

The Designated Responsible Producers for Limited Line Auto Ins Agent must hold either an activeProperty Broker Agent AND Casualty Broker Agent OR Personal Lines OR a single Limited Lines Auto Ins Agent license.

The Designated Responsible Producers for Travel Insurance Agent must ALL actively hold Property Broker-Agent AND Casualty Broker-Agent OR Life-Only Agent AND Accident and Health Agent on PDB.

At least one Designated Responsible Producers for Travel Insurance Agent must actively hold a NON RESIDENT Property Broker-Agent AND Casualty Broker-Agent OR Life-Only Agent AND Accident and Health Agent on PDB.
