NIPR ELECTS NEWMAN SECRETARY/TREASURER

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 10, 2008) — The National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) elected a new secretary/ treasurer during a board meeting held in conjunction with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) Winter National Meeting.

Tennessee Insurance Commissioner Leslie Newman took office immediately following the election. As NIPR secretary/ treasurer, Newman also will serve as chair of the NIPR Audit Committee.

Newman was appointed by Governor Phil Bredesen to lead the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance in January 2007. Prior to being appointed commissioner, Newman worked for the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) of the University of Tennessee and the Metropolitan Nashville Department of Law. She is a past president of the Tennessee Municipal Attorneys Association, a past president of the Friends of the Library for Nashville and is a board member of Nashville State Community College Foundation. A native of Dallas, Newman has more than 20 years of experience in public and private practice. She earned a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University, as well as a master's degree in urban law and a J.D. from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.

NIPR is governed by a 13-member board of directors, with six members representing the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and six members representing industry trade associations (including three producer trade associations). The NAIC's executive vice president and CEO serves as an ex-officio voting board member.
